at first i thought, “wait, didn’t cat sebastian already write a book about an aristocrat and a thief?” and then i thought, “eh, who cares.”
and BOY AM I GLAD I READ THIS BOOK. it is so utterly delightful and snappy and just… genuine. even when people are lying to each other! i saw the twists coming, which doesn’t bother me like it bothers some people (i’m actually a little proud because i don’t often predict twists very well) and while i agree with other reviewers that the sequence the whole narrative had been leading up to felt a bit abrupt, i couldn’t care less. i just had so much fun with this book and, honestly, adored the crap out of kit, percy, and kit-and-percy. they were so bright and sharp and crisp as characters, and they provoked change and growth in each other in a more tangible way than in many (most?) romances i’ve read. a lot of the evolution of their relationship and consequently of their character arcs felt so organic and, again, genuine. things got a little goopy toward the end but DO I CARE? NO!
i see that the next instalment will be about rob and marian. that’s cool. i do feel that kit and percy’s story has reached an appropriate conclusion, although i would gladly read a bunch more books about them scamming and stealing from the gentry. i will say that this book, like all historical fiction books set in early modern england, would have been a great opportunity to have some characters of colour and it’s a shame that there were none.
