Honestly this was a brilliant ethnography - people don't take sociology seriously as a field of research, but this is an example of why they should! Personal stories hit home more than impersonal statistics, but Desmond cites plenty of research too to back up the stories he records.

Do not skip the epilogue and afterword about his research methods!

Very informative and has memorable characters, but would probably not read again any time soon. Lots of triggering subjects.

A brutal and incredibly upsetting look at poverty and the damage eviction does to people and their families; what keeps it from reading as trauma porn is the author's deep commitment to the humanity of his subjects and constant examination of the systems that have not so much failed them as been designed to exploit them.
