The only slower-paced book (that I've read) that did it in such a way that it genuinely added deeper meaning to the story. I don't believe I'll ever be able to put into words just how much this book means to me.

I first read this book when I was younger. 13/14 maybe. If lost my father not too long before or maybe even it was after - I can’t really remember.

What I do remember is Finch. And when I reread it, he was just as amazing as I remembered him to be.

Whether it was the intention or not, Finch was the star of this show and Violet very much felt like a stepping stone on his journey, though I think the intention was for the opposite. I will always love Finch is some capacity, in some ways he shaped my views as a young teenager and reading this now as a 24 year old adult, roughly 10 years later, it’s just as impactful.

My reading tastes have changed - darker, more depraved and significantly spicier but this is still a book I can appreciate. In part for the nostalgia and in part because of Finch and his character.

Books don’t make me cry. To make me cry is a feat and during this reread, though teary eyed, none fell. But I remember being a teen and sobbing when I realised Finch was gone and I had to face the rest of the book without him. Much like Violet faces the rest of her life without him.

I am all the better for knowing Finch, real or not.

I recommend this book to everyone. Though, mind your triggers.

this book was mean to me and i feel sad.

Update: I have sat with this book for a while and have had time to work out my feelings. I have to bump my rating to five stars. This book has quite literally changed my life and I don’t think there will ever be a moment when I’m not thinking about finch.

One of the best damn books I've read. Annotated the hell out of this book. I seriously doubt there is a single page without some form of annotation in it. It put things into words that I personally have struggled to do for years. Fully recommend.

This book is one of the best books I have ever read. While reading this book, there were many times where I had to reflect on myself. The strong character bonds and hardships were very emotional for me as the reader. While reading this book, the characters reminded me of myself in some areas. There were mental health struggles as the main thing, and it has reminded me of myself and other people. During the process of this book, you could really see the character growth, and really learn to understand them.

Please please please, if you read this book, check the trigger warnings. This book focuses heavily on death, suicide, and mental illness in general. That said, the author handled it well and represented it beautifully. People suffering don't always present that way. Especially high school kids trying to fit in or find themselves. This was a beautiful story about a first love -a real love- between a girl who was grieving and not living and a boy who was fascinated by suicide and how to die by your own terms. All the while, no one knew his true thoughts.
