I just finished the first book in the Witcher series! Officially, the Last Wish is a prequel, so I rated it as such. The Last Wish mostly consists of short stories that give a lot of background and set up for the storyline that is to come. Because of this, it helps if you have watched the tv show, as you are then aware of the set up. I found myself really appreciating the extra background information.
I found the writing style of the book very nice, and I also liked that there were small fairytale retellings incorporated into the story.
I personally highly enjoyed watching the tv show, and I’m glad to say that this book was really close to the show! I think this book corresponds to about the first half of season 1, if I’m not mistaken. However, the Last Wish surely does give much more information than the show did. Some parts of it didn’t make it into the tv show, but the parts that did were much more broadly explained in the book, which made the story more complex. I also felt like the characters were worked out quite well, and I liked reading about them. Especially Dandilion was so great and funny!
The only thing that was a little confusing at first was the timeline. In the beginning, it was slightly unclear to me why some flashbacks were introduced, though this became better as the book progressed and then the flashbacks started to really become part of the story, which helped the plot to flow more smoothly.
All in all, I very much enjoyed reading this book and I’m excited to dive into Sword of Destiny!

It took me a long time to get around to reading The Witcher because I assumed that, like a certain other long-running fantasy series that has been adapted into a TV show, they would be long-winded inaccessible books. Boy was I wrong.
The Witcher books, in particular The Last Wish, are fast-paced, humorous, action-packed reads. The Last Wish is a series of short stories about Geralt, a famous witcher also known as "The White Wolf". He is a skilled but sometimes rash hero with a dry sense of humor, whose existence as a witcher makes him subject to bigotry but also makes him very useful to certain people around him. He journeys periodically with the powerful mage (and his off-and-on girlfriend) Yennefer who is a very strong and well-developed character in her own right, and his friend Dandelion, a bard who fits all of the stereotypes at the surface, but also has depth of character beyond that. All of these characters and more get developed further in each of the books, and I am having a thoroughly wonderful time with these tales.
One thing I find really inspiring about they works as a writer is how Sapkowski can have a different voice for every character you come across, even very minor ones. I have a lot to learn from reading other people's works, and The Witcher books are one of the most entertaining writing lessons I've had in a long time.

I first got into the Witcher world by way of the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a fantastic video game. I utterly adore the video game and was excited to read the books. It took me until after the release of the Witcher Netflix show to finally do so and, boy, did I love this book! I utterly adored everything about it. The stories are so intriguing, the characters both fantastic and grotesque, and the moral quandaries explored in this novella thought-provoking. It’s an enjoyable first read for the Witcher books. I love the world of the Witcher and am excited to read more!
I definitely recommend! 5 stars!
