An easy, and enjoyable read. This book felt warm, and homie. It has a lot of religious undertones, which is personally not for me, but regardless it was enjoyable.

Despite enjoying large parts of this, I have several big issues, and one petty one. Throughout the entire book, the characters talk about how good Esther’s pie crust is, how the she makes it with lard, how it’s unhealthy but delicious because of the lard, and it’s the best pie crust ever. At the end of the book, there is a recipe for “Esther’s Pie Crust” and it calls for shortening! No mention of lard.

I wanted to love this but I just didn't.

The first third was good, but then it just... didn't meet my expectations. There were so many subplots and nothing felt cohesive or well thought through. I don't know. It just really missed the mark for me.

DNF. I read about half and then the last three chapters. Solid writing but predictable plot.

I loved Esther and her character. I think so many people will like her. I am sure they all feel like they had a grandmother who was similar to Esther. I loved the multigenerational aspects of this book especially the connection between Ester and Iris. The community and the support they have for one another reminds me so much of home in the Midwest. I loved the story aspect of the ladies who make the crockpot meals for the funerals. They are always there to help support one another when another person needs it. It is mostly light hearted read with some heavy topics that appear later as the story goes on. Read the trigger warnings. Overall enjoyable read. I can’t wait to try Esther’s pie crust recipe!

Thank you Avon for a copy of this wonderfully charming read. Claire Swinarski's The Funeral Ladies of Ellerie County reminded me of the value in a simply told, but richly stylized, family and community story. Every once in a while I want to put down my thrillers, let go of my romcoms, and dive more into stories about everyday life, of family and small town life, and the little things that make a book captivating in special ways. This book has it, a charm and friendship and a sense that the author loved her story, the small town setting, and loved her characters. The friendship and family notes sing out and I loved reading this book.

The audio book is not for me

Not sure why I didn't DNF this book. Probably because the beginning had so much promise and by the time I was like, "what am I reading," I was too far into it. The cute cover really fooled me. This had a lot of potential to be a cute story about a group of women and their cookbook but...it wasn't. I just can't do books where the only solution to a partner's PTSD is to pray about it and take it (which he did get at the end so that's good). This book just left a weird taste in my mouth.
