Lily Allen presents an incredibly candid recount of her years in the music industry and analyses the societal expectations that shaped her career and portrayal in the media. She walks us through her life, chronologically speaking on each album and occasionally disclosing the life events that influenced specific songs. I always think about her biography when listening to her music and seeing her talk so openly about her struggles with addiction, sex, and motherhood greatly humanised a previously untouchable celebrity.

Good read

‘My thoughts exactly’ is very funny, thoughtful, relatable and honest, I had a blast reading this memoir. I guess I will be listening to more Lily Allen in the neatest future.

Such an honest, unflinching portrayal of Lily Allen's life, both pre and during the showbiz years. Sex, drugs, rock n roll (or in this case pop music) has never seemed more sad and depressing. I feel for Lily that her upbringing has kinda fucked her up.
It's interesting to know a bit of background about some of the songs though. And she seems to have a lot of insight into why she does what she does.

Exactly like the title suggests, I loved how the book reads like a diary or a conversation. It flips around between things she's mentioned and things that she will mention. That might be annoying to read in some ways, but it felt real.
I loved the way the book provided context for each of lily's albums but mostly I loved just learning more about her rocky journey into fame and all the followed on. She conveyed her experiences very well.
It was a quick read, but a worthwhile read. Would be a good choice for a holiday where you don't want something heavy.

I did really enjoy learning more about Allen's life, her music career and the abysmal sexism she experienced in the industry. I felt the her reflection was frank and felt very honest, although I don't think the style of an autobiography is for me. Sometimes the genre can try and make every moment and feeling in someone's life means something, as it must track the entirety for the life but also entertain the reader throughout. I think I will seek memoirs out more going forwards.
