T. Kingfisher is great at writing loveable characters. I’m excited to read more about Galen.

I really like this book overall but there are definitely a few parts that I didn't need. There's some in depth descriptions about what fighting a zombie is like that use all 5 senses and I really didn't need to know what biting a zombie is like. Ew. Like EWWW. Really enjoyed everything else though. Clara was awesome, Ishavan was a sweetie, the doctor was funny. There was a giant toad and a tiger. Good times.

I also love book 1

Oh my word. You must read T Kingfisher's books. You must. Plot, humor, heart, adventure, romance, characters who are so real and human shaped (when they aren't bear shaped). Pls read.

This could definitely be read as a stand alone or with reading the prequel. But in contrast to how Istvhan appears personality wise in The Saint of Steel- The Paladin’s Grace he’s quite toned down or subdued. So, in a way it didn’t seem like the same guy until the end, but barely. I actually really liked Clara as I found her more relatable than Grace of the previous book, she was also much more capable so the heroic aspect was equal, hero and heroine. Additionally, I felt this book wasn’t as romantic as the first, the romance was there but not overwhelming a romance novel, there was a considerable amount of violence and sadness that balanced out the story.
