Short, beautiful, inspiring- just like one of her better short stories. Only- it began to drag a little after she started talking about her married life- hope that wasn't a metaphor for something. :-(

L.M. Montgomery had been an inspiration for me as long as I can remember. This glimpse of her career from her own perspective is especially charming. I don’t know why her post-marital travels to the UK were featured so prominently at the end, but I delighted in how she saw the world anyway. An inspiring book for writers about perseverance and making your work personal.

This book was actually quite fascinating. I have never read an autobiography from classical figure. Hearing all the things she went through, all the places she’s seen, and all kinds of information about all her books. I can’t wait to actually pick up one of novels. I am glad I read this. Thanks for Autumn coming into my life and introducing L.M. Montgomery to me.

In her wonderful little autobiography, L.M. Montgomery spends much of its pages detailing her childhood, despite the fact this is "The story of her career". However, it quickly becomes clear why. Her childhood home and memories on Prince Edward Island are the reason her books are the way they are. Anne, Emily, Pat and all the rest were not just born when LMM put them to paper -- their origins are in the adventures she herself had on the Island. Much of her own soul is in her characters.
“I am grateful that my childhood was spent in a spot where there were many trees, trees of personality, planted and tended by hands long dead, bound up with everything of joy or sorrow that visited our lives. When I have "lived with" a tree for many years it seems to me like a beloved human companion.”
I also enjoyed this as she intended it -- as an inspiration for my own writing craft. LMM worked hard -- so very hard. She was more than talented, she was driven and determined. Her writing routines adapted to fit whatever stage of life she was in, but it did not falter. She wrote so very much, incredibly so. I am in awe of her dedication. She also detailed how writing meant so much to her and did so much for her. She loved it wholly, found so much fulfillment in it. Through all her struggles (and her life is very much one of tragedy) she continued to climb the Alpine Path.

I read this book in one sitting and it was a wonderful experience. I read it on the grass on the top of a cliff in Prince Edward Island, with the warmth of the sun and the sounds of the waves, the wind and the seagulls. Reading about Prince Edward Island while being there felt incredibly special and all I had to do to see the beauty that LMM was talking about was to look up. To me, this afternoon felt like a religious experience, even though it had nothing to do with religion. I will always remember the time I spent reading this book.

I loved the Anne of Green Gables series as a child and really enjoyed reading this biography of Lucy Maud Montgomery, especially the journal entries. Now compelled to read the Gables series all over again!

This would be a perfect five star read as a major fan of Lucy Maud, except for the chapter at the end about her honeymoon which was so out of the blue and did not contribute to the story of her career at all

Charming little book. Helped to understand the author’s inspirations. Especially nice as I just toured the places of which she referred. Recommend for Anne fans.
