The sheer breadth of this book is very impressive. There are so many moving parts and ve schwab manages to weave them together so intricately. That being said, because there are so many moving parts, there are still some loose threads that I desperately want to pull. I’m not sure if there will ever be another book, but I want one!!!! Part of the reason that these books are so compelling is because they have a very Batman-villainesque feeling to them and there’s not really a hero to hang your hopes on, so you have to decide which of your morals you will set aside as you choose who to root for.

Well, mungkin agak terlambat.

Well, enggak salah sih, tapi motivasinya nggak kuat. Malah kayak jalan sendiri-sendiri. Vic justru punya tujuan sendiri, Eli pun begitu. Marce malah kayak pengganggu nggak penting dan haus perhatian. Kalo selama ini LB menyembunyikan eksistensi mereka, Marce sebaliknya. Dia bangga jadi LB.

Marce tuh gambaran korban misoginis menurutku. Semasa dia hidup nggak dianggap, cuma jadi pajangan. Justru ini saatnya dia show-off. And sometimes it feel annoyed, actually.

Too much focuses.

Again, I feel like I was not in the right mindset for most of this book. Because I enjoyed it a lot, but didn't have the energy to get sucked in by the story until today when I took a day to rest and I read the last 150 pages or so.
But this book was really good! I mean reading it right after the first one just really highlights what a big role reversal we suddenly have between Eli and Victor. Each character, even the background ones, is so complex and interesting. There is a clear understanding of what everyone's motives are making them easy to appreciate as a character even when you don't agree with them or they flat out do terrible things. The plot was a great continuation of the first book. I think the time gap was a big help here to have a lot of things get set up off page that really moved the story along so that this sequel was similar enough but not repetitive despite its parallels.
If I'm not mistaken, a third book is coming. I for one will definitely pick it up. And reread these then when I am in a better mindset for them and can enjoy them a lot more than I already did.

  1. Way too many time jumps, too confusing that way.  —> felt like they were more frequent than in the first book? Or at least they didn’t come off as this confusing
  2. I really don’t need the back story and povs of all the new characters, that’s not why I’m reading the second book of a series, also there’s too many new characters that seem to be important for the main plot (I wanted more Victor, Mick, Syd and Eli, not whatever this was)
  3. On the same note: random side characters getting povs is just so unnecessary (e.g. that one doctor, just to tell me he’s shady? I could have guessed that without wasting my time on a chapter from his point of view) —> makes me think that the author assumes the readers aren’t smart enough to guess the stuff that’s not being said. We are. The story is not that complicated. Subtext is a thing.
  4. Feel like comments 1 to 3 are the reason why the book is almost 600 pages long. But a lot of the chapters feel like fillers and I really could have done without them. —> book needs more "show, don’t tell", hate it when I’m handed every small piece of information (let the readers guess, don’t hand them everything)
  5. Definite Pro: Victor confirmed somewhere on the ace spectrum
  6. Still like the writing style (most of the time)
