Vengeful is to Vicious what Part II was to the first Godfather. Just so phenomenal from start to finish. It brought back characters we were already glued to in the first book but also gave us some brand new ones that actually wind up stealing the show a bit, including Marcella Morgan who is a “Good for Her” baddie for the ages. This was a satisfying conclusion to Victor and Eli’s story but honestly, Schwab is so talented that I’d absolutely read more about this world and these characters if she were to bring them out again to play some more.

Overall Thoughts:

⁕ So much of Vicious focused on Victor's perspective, whereas Vengeful gives more focus to the origin stories of Eli and other characters. The addition of these details strengthened my understanding of character development and choices in the series overall.

⁕ I am SO HERE for the female super villian. I love the exploration of power and greed through her eyes. I love her glaring faults and ugly hopes. She is definitely one of my new favorite characters.

⁕ I complained in my review of Vicious that the book was not as violent or gory as people claimed. This book definitely rectifies that. The stakes are RAISED.

⁕ Somehow, V.E. Schwab manages to write about violence and gore like poetry. Her style never ceases to amaze me.

The sequel to Vicious, this book continues to set the reader right into the lives of our "heroes" five years after we left them. We are also introduced to Marcella, the worlds most bad-a woman. The book floats through time and perspective, drifting through the past five years and 8 characters to build the story. (There is also a small time travel to Eli's childhood that, while not absolutely necessary to the plot line, is so good). The continued theme of there are no true heroes in this story, we meet our first possibly true villain, someone that even Eli and Victor can come together to stand against. You will fall deeper in love with complicated characters and you will want to read faster the further you get in, but I encourage you to slow down and savor every word. The book really is beautifully written in its chaos.
