A fast-paced contemporary thriller AND a historical fiction mystery?? YES PLEASE.

This book was great, and super engaging. I loved the ride.
This woman had the redemption arc I wanted for the widow in The Widow of Wall Street, but never got in that book.

Spolier-ish:

A bit of an odd angle for part of it, but I also have a totally different perspective on that part having read Picoult's Wish You Were Here.

Topical subject with echoes of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. This novel pulls you right in and keeps you guessing. I enjoyed the way the revelations unfolded and the character insight.

Personally did not like both Joan’s and Melissa’s personalities and attitudes. Lillian is the only redeemable character, which made her story in the book very bittersweet.

Mysterious. Intense. Well-written.

TW: There are instances of physical and sexual assault, as well as PTSD symptoms throughout the story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, even some of the more outlandish bits, I had a few very satisfying “Aha!” moments. And I absolutely hated one of the characters for most of the story, which hasn’t happened for me in a while - so I appreciate the writer’s skill there.

TW for sui*ide and SA.

First Carol Goodman book and I was pleasantly surprised. Admittedly, I slept on this one, with it sitting on my shelf, the last one to be picked for the dodgeball team. I also stopped and started a few times before achieving lift off. Around page 100 it starts picking up and by page 200 it fully gains it momentum. The book is based on some of her mother's experiences and is inspired by Dr. Blasey-Ford's testimony. The booked gained a bit more respect from me having learned that. It also has an interesting historical subplot that I did not realize would run through the book as I began to read it. Certainly, with all mysteries, there is that element of suspended disbelief - and here I had to suspend more than usual which is why it started at a 4 star for me. With that said, it is a good twisty story.
