The Death I Gave Him

Em X. Liu

3.54 AVERAGE

Gory thriller. A little hard to follow and some of the details lack continuity. A science fiction theme, but more of a thriller in my view.

Liu is a talented and very descriptive writer! I didn’t get overly attached to the characters, and felt like what they say and what they do is often at odds with the tone of the story- but they were caught up in quite a tangled mess so what do I know? You don’t need to be familiar with Hamlet to enjoy this book but I suspect it helps. Overall ‘The Death I Gave Him’ is intelligent and poetic- 3 stars for me because I thought it was put together and written well, but a bit tough to stay engaged with.

“I suppose, all this is to say: thank you, Horatio. I know you hate that. I know you believe it. I’m going to say it anyway, even though my hand aches; I’d write it a thousand times, wear down all my tendons for you. Because I meant it, and even here, in this apartment I am trapped indefinitely in, cut off from the rest of the world by glass and steel through nothing but my own damn foolishness, I mean it. I do.
I’m going to live forever.
  Yours,
  Hayden.”

i need more gay ai x human

oh man this was boring :( i think it'd be much much better as a 200 page or so novella, the pace was gruelling to me. it's not a bad book overall, just boring interspersed with some very good stuff. there are two AI sex scenes babeyyy and they both slayed and were the highlight of the book. that's the reason for the lgbtq tag on this book btw (the disembodied AI is gay). but yeah, it overall drags a bit much

Not a huge Shakespeare fan, and found this retelling of Hamlet just okay.

This was clearly doing something very clever, it just wasn't for me.

Who would have thought that the protagonist of a hamlet retelling might have some mental health issues?

The depiction of depression was realistic enough to make this borderline unpleasant to read - and even when he wasn't wading through mental sludge he was being obnoxious.

The meta-textual/document combination structure was an intriguing idea, but not really fleshed out - the storytelling mode (eg time granularity) was very similar and there were no obvious differences in tone or narrative bias.
