The one that really started Stephenson in his iconic style. Enjoyable read, as long as you can buy into it being over the top satire. Some scenes were absolutely unnecessary and bordered on outright wrong, hence the lost star. Nonetheless, it is clear that this is a fairly iconic read in the genre, and was worth the read.

After a first half that was cleverly satirical about modern corporations, culture, and capitalism, Stephenson gets into a lot of linguistic/psychological/mythological/metaphysical analysis about language being like programming code for humans and I stopped understanding much.
Still funny though, and there was a cute dog POV chapter and a courier service whose employees ride on skateboards using a magnetic attachment to cars to go at 60 mph like crazy waterskiers, so whatever. 4 stars. Even though I'm still confused.
The rule of cool drives this book through all those dense, barely comprehensible bits.
