If ever you needed to have read the rest of the series — the rest of the world — before jumping into a book, it was here. The entire first third, maybe even first half, was a parade of former characters and connections that bored me to tears. The central relationship was fine, though not incredibly rootable, and at the end of the day I really didn’t care if they wound up together or not. There was such a meal made out of how Phoebe wanted to learn how to manage her estate and her farmers herself, but as soon as she tried, West came in and simply… did everything… and she never actually learned. The entire ending wrapped up so quickly, though I guess it made sense in the context of the story. I just wish West’s character made sense in the context of this story, without the previous books he’s purportedly in. Not Lisa Kleypas’s best.

I can't get enough of West, he's by far my favorite character. I loved this book, it ended too soon. I wanted so much more of their story

Farmer West, Sad Boi West, I love him so much. He and Phoebe are a good match, and it is nice to see West come to terms with his growth over the last four books. I would have preferred a longer ending, as it feels very abrupt - but I would have spent 100 more pages with these two. I loved reading about this two together, and how honest they were about their feelings; it was a very mature relationship. The kids never felt obtrusive or annoying, as some kid characters can be, and we got to see a lot of fun character interactions among the wider cast. Definitely one to read in order though, at least after Cold Hearted Rake and Devil in Spring.
