This hurt in all the best ways. I very much wanted to physically fist fight the author and then rip the book to shreds, then light the shreds on fire and put the fire out with my tears. Never have I read a book that has made me connect with and want to protect a character within the first 4 pages.

I cried. I cried so many times my heart still hurts.

A truly delightful experience and look forward to more pain and hurt in the next book. 🤩🐺

I honestly did not know what to expect going into this book. I enjoyed the one other TJ Klune book I’ve read, but this one was so much darker. I honestly really enjoyed that though. He didn’t hold back during fights scenes or in the life changing events the characters went through. It felt high stakes the entire time.

The only reason this isn’t a 5 star from me is because I struggle a bit with Klune’s writing style. Once I am fully into the book it’s easier, but something about the flow is just a little bit off to me until I settle in.

I’m so conflicted with this one. I wanted to fall head over heels for this series because I love Klune’s other fantasy novels. But parts of it didn’t sit right with me (namely the age difference & possessiveness).

I loved the found family & the pack. I loved the setting & a lot of the characters. I loved Klune’s take on werewolves.

I found some of it repetitive and I understand the function of repeating memories/stories/thoughts, but because I read it in a shorter time span- it grated. I wanted more depth or newer information? I’m not sure. But again, I understand that repetition is part of life and it made it feel more real but it didn’t jive with me here.

I loved most of this story. The things that weirded me out or almost made me dnf was how much Ox thought of Joe always as a little boy or a young teen, usually in sentimental and intimate moments. I know what Klune was going for, but it didn’t quite land right with me.

Nor did the way Ox’s dad spoke to him. There’s zero mention that I could find that the R-word would be used so heavily in the first 60 pages. Again, I get that his dad was trash, but could he have used another method to describe that he viewed Ox as “simple and dumb.” hell, I just did 😒

Also, Ox is anything but simple and dumb 😡

Okay so I absolutely love this book. I think it's beautifully written even if at first the writing felt childish - very similar to the Aristotle and Dante books. But that got better as the characters got older so I was able to get over it. I loved the characters, all of them, and how they interacted. I loved the story line and I loved Ox and Joe together eventually. Ox's story was so amazing and I loved watching him grow from the boy who idolizes his terrible father to the man who was able to lead the pack and care about them all so much. It was truly beautiful to see. The author did such a good job portraying grief and heartache throughout the whole book and I was so close to crying at work because of it. It was all really well done.
The only thing that made me a little uncomfortable was the age difference. When the wolf family was first introduced I found myself hoping that the love interest was Carter because it was mentioned that he was around Ox's age but it became clear that it was actually Joe really quickly and he was only 6 years old compared to Ox's 11 and that was incredibly icky to think about. I know the romance and attraction between them didn't start until Joe was 17 but Ox was still 22 at that time and that's still not really okay honestly. I think the author tried to save it a little bit by having Ox refuse to make it physical until Joe was at least 18 but it still didn't really sit well with me. He could have easily made him already 18. It wouldn't have made it completely okay, but it would have been a little better.
That being said, I still loved their relationship once they were older. I've always been a fan of friends to lovers and this one was done really well. I loved that Joe let Ox have his anger and sit with it even though he was dying to talk to Ox about everything and once they did finally talk, I felt like the communication was done well and they didn't jump right into anything which was nice to see.
Now I also have to talk about the elephant in the room. This is basically another version of Twilight except with werewolves and a mlm relationship. But I loved Twilight and I loved this one just as much honestly. I also thought it was really funny when the author even referenced it in the book. That was probably my favorite thing ever when I got to that part. It was so funny.

World building galore, TJ Klune really showed off how he could build green creek through the experiences and emotions of the pack and it felt magical at points. the cast of characters was so good! you couldn't not fall in love with how these main pack characters were written. One thing that i was sceptical on how it would pan out was the relationship between ox and joe, however seeing how they were portrayed and how much say both of them got, it was ok, but I can also appreciate how this would make a lot of people not want to read it.

there were a few nuanced points withing Klunes writing which took me a moment to get used to, specifically the words in groups of three and the he said she said etc. honestly nothing horrendous just me being a little picky with how i like to read works.

All in all I did really enjoy the book, I am excited to see how the series plays out in the other books.
