I loved most of this story. The things that weirded me out or almost made me dnf was how much Ox thought of Joe always as a little boy or a young teen, usually in sentimental and intimate moments. I know what Klune was going for, but it didn’t quite land right with me.
Nor did the way Ox’s dad spoke to him. There’s zero mention that I could find that the R-word would be used so heavily in the first 60 pages. Again, I get that his dad was trash, but could he have used another method to describe that he viewed Ox as “simple and dumb.” hell, I just did 😒
Also, Ox is anything but simple and dumb 😡

World building galore, TJ Klune really showed off how he could build green creek through the experiences and emotions of the pack and it felt magical at points. the cast of characters was so good! you couldn't not fall in love with how these main pack characters were written. One thing that i was sceptical on how it would pan out was the relationship between ox and joe, however seeing how they were portrayed and how much say both of them got, it was ok, but I can also appreciate how this would make a lot of people not want to read it.

there were a few nuanced points withing Klunes writing which took me a moment to get used to, specifically the words in groups of three and the he said she said etc. honestly nothing horrendous just me being a little picky with how i like to read works.

All in all I did really enjoy the book, I am excited to see how the series plays out in the other books.

I think this book just isn't for me.

Having read Cerulean Sea and Whispering Door, I was expecting an introspective cosy fantasy. This was decidedly not that.

Being an educator, the age gap really didn't sit right with me. They meet at 10 and 16 and Ox constantly thinks back to the 10 year old Joe throughout the book. As a result, I felt that Joe's character development was stilted and at pivotal times nonexistent. I also struggled with accepting some of the character development we are told about Ox midway through. Perhaps if they had met at the same developmental point, these issues would have been easier to overcome.

I can see that there is an audience for this book and certainly I do love a found family trope - plenty of that here. But I simply wasn't able to overcome the timing of the age gap.

ARC received via NetGalley.

I've had this in my audible library for ages. At some point even listend to it halfway through, but I had no memories of it.
Now after reading one of Klune's recent works I wanted to give this another shot and I don't regret it.

It was an entertaining story with a different take on the a/b/o trope and the roles of wolfs.
The main characters Ox and Joe were such sweethearts you fall in love with them.

The only thing that I couldn't get out of my head, was every time it said something like "Ox growled" or "singing with his pack" was the video of that guy saying "on every level except physical I am a wolf". That ruined it a bit for me and I couldn't take it seriously.

But all in all it was good story, just try not to think of that video while reading it.
