I'm conflicted about The Best Halloween of All, because on one hand, it got my tutoring students talking about their Halloween costumes (a witch and a kitty cat), but on the other, the kid in the story disses the hard work his parents' put into his Halloween costume every year and is more happy with a paper bag over his head and a paper towel roll for a sword. I know it's fiction and I'm just supposed to run with it, but that is so ridiculous!

Ben was a bit annoying. He didn't appreciate how awesome his parents were. They were so creative in the costume ideas they came up with! Anyway, the main point of the book is that Ben wanted to have a say in his costume instead of being at the whim of his parents and older brother. I get that. I just really appreciated how awesome the costume ideas were. Some of them reminded me of what my mom used to come up with. One year I was a tube of toothpaste (complete with a painted lampshade on my head as the cap). Another year I wanted to be a black cat, so my little brother ended up being a mouse that year. I guess what I am saying is, appreciate having creative parents at Halloween because even if you don't like the costume idea at the time, you will look back one day and miss what you had.
