This book was a little mermaid retelling about the sea witch “Ursula” with a major twist. The main character is Shelly who wants to be popular but to also tried her best to fit in order to make and keep her friends. She loved the aquarium, which her family owned in Triton Bay (located in California) Shelly did not want to portrayed as a nerd and so she did everything she could to be considered cool. As she was trying to be someone she wasn’t she was also part of the swim team at her middle school. When it was time for a swim meet to begin against the winning team she wanted to help her team win. And so one day Ursula dragged Shelly to the ocean due to littering. One Shelly apologized Ursula granted her a wish. The wish Shelly asked was to be the fastest swimmer and her wish was granted. But her wish cane with a price and so she was the fastest swimmer, but by being the fastest she had lost a friend. But most importantly she was turning into a fish. Once Ursula told Shelly what she needed to do to be turned back into a human she had to retrieve the trident from her families aquarium. This book is a middle grade that is filled with suspense, but there is no happy ending. At the end I was expecting a happy ending, but I clearly was wrong. All I can say is to be careful what you wish for because you just might get it and there is no turning back.

I wanted this to be slightly scarier but kids who like the Goosebumps series will like this new series!

I love Disney so putting a extra spin on the villains is right up my alley. This book is targeted for 8-12 years old and though it’s advertised as spooky, it’s not as scary as the Goosebump series I used to read when I was younger.

This tackles friendship, peer pressure, self discovery, and many more. Very quick to read and keeps and hold your attention throughout.

2022 read #39

3 stars! What the heck was that ending?! It was so unexpected and I hated it so much :( Even after Shelly made new friends, espescially E, Vera decides to make her a servant for the sea witch!
