Honestly I first rated it higher then I couldn't sleep thinking about the issues I had with this book. The world is over populated and the government imposes sudden ethical restrictions around births, fine. The main character at that moment finds out she's pregnant, and doesn't at this point, or any other point up until the last 10 pages, actually seem like she wants a child, and definitely not enough to do the drastic measures done in this book. And at no point is an abortion seriously considered, or say even discussed with her partner or a friend within the context of the world, food shortages, violence against women, murder, zenaphobia, not one consideration do I want to bring someone into this world let alone do I want a child at all? And then the partner makes decision after decision without consulting her and in direct opposition of her wishes? Gives his sperm illegally to his brother, which they discussed and seemed to agree risks outweighed anything else then surprise, his brother and terrible wife are pregnant? Red flag. Then he empties their savings to pay some extra tax, again illegal and also put her job as an accountant at even more risk, all the be in the over 400 club which they go on to NEVER USE. Red flag. And then at the end he stops taking his meds so he can die and possibility leave her with the baby she didn't even really want in the first place? So many no's. Could have been a lot more as premise was really interesting at first. Kept reading to see if the author could bring it back for me but in the end felt bleak by the supposed happy ending.
