I enjoyed the beautiful randomness that came with this book. Following Max around was fun, mainly because she was determined to enjoy her dream job, even as it kept throwing curve balls her way.

So this was originally self-pub. Editors exist for a reason and this would really, really, *really* have benefited from one in terms of consistency of plot, character and world-building. My expectations for a published work are considerably higher than this achieved; it would have been acceptable as self-pub because then your expectations are managed and you can read it knowing that it is unpolished. But I don't enjoy reading work as unpolished as this, so this one's not for me.
