Nujood's story is important. However, this book was translated from Arabic to French and then from French to English. Things get so lost in chain translation, this story may very well be, is even likely told very differently in its native langue. Unfortunately something about the English translation felt sanitized and uncomfortable. Like the story had been given to a Hollywood writer. In addition, a more journalist approach would have been better when it came to telling this story. The story is written in first person, the language is colorful and wordy, clearly not how ten-year-old girls internal dialogue would sound. This is the story of a child's trauma, written by someone else much too close to the time of the events that took place. This should have been her story to tell, I was under the impression that this was a memoir when I picked it up, I was clearly very wrong. This felt exploitive and while (as I said before) some of this is due to the translation, not all of it is.

It was a touching story of a terrible tragedy -- and I realize it was a young girl, but the flow just wasn't there. Still enough for me to sit and read the whole thing in a couple of hours and worth it.

This book made me so sick. I'm so horrified and upset. Reading about the controversy behind how the profits for this book were handled made me even more upset. I'll have to get back to this review at a later date.

This one is also written for kids (older kids). It is the true story of a 10 year old girl who was married off by her desperate father. She is abused by her much older, horrible husband and gets the courage to run away, find a lawyer and file for divorce in a country where such things aren't done. It's inspiring - and the bad stuff is referred to fairly obliquely so a well-read child could handle it.

I think it is an interesting perspective to read about this events from an innocent child's point of view. There are no big revelations or discussions on societal and cultural customs and it is simply a matter of a child wanting to have a better life.

What a story, it is unbelievable that marriages to children still happens in today's world. How brave of Nujood to fight for her rights. Quick read, read it in a few hours.

A powerful story of a very brave girl. I was pleasantly surprised that the judges at the court acted so quickly, to be honest. I had half expected Nujood to meet more resistance from the legal system.
