I loved this book! I had originally heard about this one in a YouTube video about “Friends to Lovers“ book recommendations. I‘m so glad I picked it up, because I really want to like the romantasy subgenre, but I don‘t like a single one of the popular romantasy books. Believe me, I‘ve tried many. So, I‘m even more glad to be able to add this book to the list of new faves.
The slow-burn was great and the love interest is exactly the type of character I love reading about. He‘s smart, quiet, and actually nice to the female mc, but can also be super protective. I don‘t know what so many people love about those love interests who are just complete jerks. I will never understand.
Furthermore, the world, specifically the troll city most of the story takes place in, was really interesting. I liked learning about their customs and way of life.
One gripe I do have with this book is that the last third or fourth felt quite rushed. The book took a sudden turn. It felt a bit disconnected. We were suddenly introduced to this greater threat - that I‘m not gonna spoil -, which was then equally as suddenly resolved. I don‘t understand the author‘s decision to end the book like this. It didn‘t feel natural. These plot elements didn‘t have any time to be well-developed.
Nevertheless, I still had a good time, for the most part. I couldn‘t stop myself from reading for the majority of the book.

3 Stars • "The Hanging City" by Charlie N. Holmberg is a fantasy adventure that follows Lark, a young woman with the power to wield fear. She's on the run from her abusive father and finds sanctuary in Cagmar, a city of trolls—humanity's sworn enemies. Lark uses her gift to protect the trolls' hanging city from monsters, but her loyalty is tested when she faces a powerful troll who hates humankind. Throughout her journey, Lark learns about her past, the power of fear, and the complexities of trust and hope. The book explores themes of love, class conflict, and rigid social rules in a harsh world.

The rollercoaster of heartache, contentment, pain, survival, joy, hope, pain, loss so on and so on. Oh my goodness, I was hooked, rooting for our girl to have a well deserved happy ending, despite feeling like it was never coming.

Huge fan of the author and she mig HR have out done herself with this one. Loved very second. Who would think I’d fall in the with the Trollis community. What a world she built and the characters within.
Twas surprised how much fliked this stary of a human girl running away and falling for a tral... it sounds weird, I know. It was good and kept my attention and I finished it befare I knew it.

This book gave me similar vibes to Legends and Lattes, just with higher stakes!
the world that charlie n. holmberg built was very intriguing! her writing was easy to follow, and i enjoyed following lark on her journey and personal development within the trollis city of Cagmar.
Unfortunately, the romance was a little lacking for me (maybe I'm just not a monster romance girlie), and the pacing of the plot progression was a little off at times. also, the ending left me feeling just a little bit too unsatisfied.
