I loved the world building, the whimsy, and the magic there is no doubt that this is a story that has been enchanting kids and adults for a long time. Who doesn't love reading about mermaids, fairies, and adventure. The writing was also very well done with everything fitting together nicely. The characters had depth and were complicated purposely flip flopping back and forth. The narrator was an incredible example of an unreliable narrator. However there were many things that made me uncomfortable there was a lot of racism towards indigenous and native populations even using hateful slurs. It kind of ruined the experience. Unlike the Disney version there was violence which doesn't bother me but having kids his young be preforming such violence made me incredibly uncomfortable. Sexism was also prevalent but it was not as bad and can more easily be accepted as a product of the time. Also it seemed like the author wanted you to find out some moral from this but it was hard to determine what was the moral. Overall it's an incredible story but has insensitivity issues that are impossible to ignore.
