Dreamy and dry in turns, and fascinatingly vague—it’s often impossible to tell when the allegory for child’s imaginary play ends and reality begins (especially since they are usually portrayed as one and the same). The novel also features short but alarming dashes of English imperialism, along with intense anti-indigenous racism. A fascinating text for academic readings (oodles to say about constructions of history, childhood, gender, and heteronormativity), but not one I would have enjoyed as a child, or enjoy uncritically now.

The Complete Peter Pan edition contains the novel Peter and Wendy, the six chapters from The Little White Bird that go under the title of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and the 1904 play Peter Pan; and, let me say, the whole thing was painfully boring.

I despised everything of it: the plot, the characters and not the least Barrie's style; his upper-middle-class use of the language is irritating to unimaginable degrees and, at times, it is just unnecessarily wordy and complex. I only managed to finish this book because I was dragged on from page to page by a free youtube audiobook version: if someone else hadn't done the reading for me, I would have soon dropped the book (no wonder it took me two years to finish it!).

Thumb down.

I loved the world building, the whimsy, and the magic there is no doubt that this is a story that has been enchanting kids and adults for a long time. Who doesn't love reading about mermaids, fairies, and adventure. The writing was also very well done with everything fitting together nicely. The characters had depth and were complicated purposely flip flopping back and forth. The narrator was an incredible example of an unreliable narrator. However there were many things that made me uncomfortable there was a lot of racism towards indigenous and native populations even using hateful slurs. It kind of ruined the experience. Unlike the Disney version there was violence which doesn't bother me but having kids his young be preforming such violence made me incredibly uncomfortable. Sexism was also prevalent but it was not as bad and can more easily be accepted as a product of the time. Also it seemed like the author wanted you to find out some moral from this but it was hard to determine what was the moral. Overall it's an incredible story but has insensitivity issues that are impossible to ignore.

Peter Pan has never been my favorite but Jim Dale reading it made it worth while.

Oh boy. I'm not sure what to say other than I cannot think of one aspect I enjoyed about this book. I tend to gravitate toward dark, disturbing, and twisted stories (what does that say about me???), but this was just sad with no pay off. Each page felt like a chore to get through and I didn't even find the illustrations redeeming. I'm clearly in the minority, but I may have possibly been bit by the old "heard the story so many times that the original feels like a rip off" bug. Definitely not my cup of tea and I shall choose to bury my head in the sand and pretend this version does not exist. ;) The only reason I didn't DNF this was A) I'm trying my hardest to finish all my popsugar books if possible and B) I try not to DNF books under 200 pages if possible. Rant is over and now I'll move on to the next read!
