It was like a sexy, mystery version of Bridgerton. It’s rather slow and I did skip a chapter or two cause I’m impatient as hell but it held my attention for a good while and it was rather funny. Can’t wait for the second

Eliza Melrose is an independent woman who tries to fulfill her dreams in a society where women are not taken into account in business. She is a dreamer, adventurous, curious, protect her family, pursues the truth, and stands up for what's right. She just wants to travel the world and tell his experiences through his father's newspaper. What is not allowed to her for being a woman, although she manages to satisfy that need to write, even if others take the credit. In their plans is not the commitment of a wedding. But being introduced to high society due to her family's new economic and social status, she is forced to become engaged to the son of her father's partner. Eliza doesn't believe in arranged marriages. She wants to marry a man she is in love with. So she will try at all costs to get out of that commitment.

Johnny Winters does not have a good reputation. A halo of mystery surrounds this duke, which intensifies when he arrived at Belmore Square. His strange appearance only raises more rumors about what happened in the past with the Winters family. But in his return, there is a hidden purpose. When Eliza crosses her path, sparks and butterflies flutter in her wake. Eliza is dazzled by the duke's beauty. And she can't help but evade the curiosity that arouses in her, despite knowing his bad reputation as a libertine.

I really liked Eliza. She is a strong character. I didn't have that same perception of Johnny. Maybe it was because the novel is written in first person. However, I enjoyed it and I liked the chemistry between them. About the second character, I liked Clara, Eliza's sister. And I look forward to reading more about her in this series.

A Night with the Duke is a light read, with the drama that can unfold in a society where reputation and appearances are paramount in high society. This is the story of the first love of a girl and the last of a duke with whom no one spent more than one night.

I received this arc in exchange of an honest review.

This was.... fine? I don't claim to be an expert on Regency England, but this author could have benefited from researching a bit more thoroughly before writing in this genre. The novel was fine, but if you're looking for a historical romance there are far better ones out there.

One Night with the Duke: ★ ★

Jodi Ellen Malpas (Belmore Square, #1)

“If I knew your mind well enough, paid enough attention, listened with a keen enough ear, to know your words when I am blessed to be reading them.”

A relatively short read, but it took me a lifetime because I was just not into it at all.

Qualms:
– A deeply unlikable heroine. Always complaining.
– More telling than showing. Says the duke is "mysterious" approximately 19 times a page.
– Very minimal interaction between hero & heroine. Especially when her love realization comes in 50% through.
– Constant back & forth of "I want you" but "No, I can't have you" and "Come here" but also "Go away". Pick a side.
– Terms and phrases that would never be used in a historical romance like, “that is a title that carries a lot of clout” and “there may be a considerable amount of sucking up to do”. What?
– Author uses ' instead of " for quotes. Minor, all things considered, but threw me off more than I cared to admit.

JEM going into historical regency romance had me intrigued, the story was good, the beginning was slow, then it picked up and ended a bit rushed for my liking. There were similar situations with other historical series I have read and that was something I didn't expected from the author, but I like the twists the story had at the end. Eliza was a great character, I love everything about her, she was perfect for the Duke and the story, but let's be honest we all wanted to know about the Duke, he was a mystery and as all male characters we know written by JEM, we all wanted to see how he was and his story. I would've loved to know a bit more about his story. The elements of the regency genre were very well executed, no modernization and accurate to the time period, I like the steam and the way the main couple interacted with each other, their chemistry and what they found in the other, they certainly had to overcome a few things, and I loved every page of how their story unfolded. I can't wait to read the next in the Belmore Square series.

The anticipationnnnnn!!!
As always with Jodi there are so many twist and unexpected turns you don’t see coming.

Not sure if i just don’t understand Elizas mum but god i hated her she was so selfish and her dad. I don’t blame her for wanting to fight for a more just world.

I loved the fact that it wasn’t just one deviant child but all 3 of them had their secrets.

Eliza and The Dukes back and forth and arguing i really enjoyed. Eliza was always going to win, the Duke was no match.

Also it was giving me The Princess diaries 2 vibes with them both secretly being opposed to the marriage

You can take the girl out of the country but you cant take the country out of the girl…. And her climbing down drain pipe adventures

I just wasn’t interested. The main character, Eliza, started grating on my nerves too.

One Night With the Duke is a Regency romance with a little mystery involved. Eliza Melrose has been taken out of the country and is now living life in London society. She has been promised to a man that she doesn't love but is intrigued by the mysterious Duke of Chester.

I enjoyed this one. I enjoyed how Eliza very much wants her independence and wants to be a journalist. I despise how she's been forced into an engagement with someone she didn't know. Yes I know that happened, but this is romance and romance/love should always win.

Did I think the Duke of Chester was a class A jerk? Yep, but an cute morally gray alpha hole jerk.

In the end this was some mystery that got solved and once revealed it added up. There technically was some cheating, but also not, so do with that as you see fit. If you're wondering spice, there are two open door scenes that can be avoided.
