“We are small people, with small names, meant to live small lives. That’s all we’re allowed to live. That’s all the world wants us to live. But sometimes, even that, even that, it won’t give us. Instead the world wants to crush us.”

Everyone should read this book. This book is horrible. Both are thoughts that went through my mind frequently while reading it. Let me be clear, it is not horrible in any measure of literature. It is beautifully written, both in language and in the beauty of the truth. But it is hard. It is a painful read. This is not a happy book. It is hopeful, and the reader can hang on to that hope...fight for it...like our characters do.

If I could only force People In General to read one fiction book, it would be this one. This one. Read it.

The content level, though perhaps valuable in its realism, was a bit more graphic than I was ready for.

A beautifully haunting story about three young kids running from danger for a chance to hope and dream. Pulga, Chico, and Pequena embark on a gruelling and dangerous trip from their homeland all the way to the United States. What these children had to endure broke my heart in a million pieces. It explores how horrible people can be and sometimes how emphatic some people can be. Definitely a story that will stay with me for a while.
