Spoiler: This review might turn into an essay!
This book is insanely written, I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone, but especially to people in a reading slump or are trying to get into reading or trying to explore their reading style. I also think of 'the classics' as DAUNTING and HARD and honestly the word SCARY comes to mind, but Jane Eyre combats these stereotypes that I along with many people make and think about 'the classics'. It is incredibly well written and surprisingly FAST PACED, I am/was as shocked as you must be now if you scroll through the reviews before reading a book to try motivate yourself but honestly just give it a go and even if you want to dnf (did not finish) it DON'T UNTIL YOU READ AT LEAST ONE HUNDRED PAGES, ok now time for me to obsess over it...
This book is sort of predictable but I love it! Ádele is my favourite character and for the past twenty pages there was no mention of Adele and if I didn't find out what happened to her the book would have gone down a few stars because resolutions matter! But thank you Jane Austen because I found out what happened to all the characters!

Victober 2023 reread: I love Charlotte Bronte's writing as much as ever, and Jane Eyre is always a delight to read, though it's interesting to compare one's feelings about it at different stages of life. ☺️ This time around, I had much less patience for Rochester-- I harangued at him to leave Jane alone at various points, especially when he's playing games early on in their relationship. But that doesn't take away from the beautifully satisfying place that Jane finds herself in by the end of the novel, where she finally has full agency over her own life AND the deep contentment of living with someone that enjoys her company so completely that she need never filter her own personality. It's idealistic, and the road to get there may be full of toxicity, but boy is it a great story and a perfectly satisfying ending.

This book is what began my lifelong affinity for British literature. I was 11. I was staying the night at my friend Natasha's house, and her mom had introduced this mother-daughter bedtime reading aloud thing, and they were just a few chapters into Jane Eyre. I listened. I think it was one of the chapters where Jane hangs out with Helen in the super-depressing boarding school. Don't ask me what it was that caught me, because those are NOT the thrilling bits, but caught I was. I suspect it was the language, richer and older than anything else I'd read, but still understandable (with a modicum of mental application), and deeply satisfying once the brain illuminated the jump from words to meaning.
Next thing I knew, I was buying a copy of Jane Eyre at a book fair and devouring it. I lost that copy one morning in middle school. I mourned. (I still feel sad.) I bought a new edition. Next year, when I was 12, I was struck by the idea that where there was ONE incredible book, there must be more. Cue the search for 19th century books written by women. Enter Jane Austen, etc., etc.. The rest is history.
Rereading Jane Eyre, a story well known and loved by me, was a thrill, but with the fun this time around of accumulating new opinions and evaluations that I didn't think about when I was younger. Though Charlotte Bronte never invests her heroines with any need to grow or change--they spring from her pen fully formed and unapologetically deliberate in all their actions--this story still has a tremendous amount of heart. And also there's all that romantic suspense--UNBEATABLE!

took me long enough to finish this LOL (3 months i was too busy fr)
switched from the physical version to audible like 1/2 through the books cause the language lowkey made me confused and made me not wanna read, but i actually thoroughly enjoyed reading this!!! jane n edward's relationship started off so cute and ended so cute i love them a lot actually. mr rochester is so silly im ngl the silliest love interest out here rn

Esse livro foi uma surpresa tão grande para mim. Os únicos romances dessa época que já li foram os da Jane Austen, então esperava algo parecido, com a maioria dos acontecimentos centrados ao redor de bailes, visitas, cartas e reuniões sociais, e o que recebi foi uma história cheia de reviravoltas e acontecimentos surpreendentes.
Jane foi uma personagem que a principio não me chamou muita atenção, mas que ao fim da história eu absolutamente admirava. De uma criança ora impetuosa ora apática, ela se torna uma mulher responsável, sensata e fiel aos seus princípios, mas sem perder sua singularidade e a personalidade que faz dela única. Em diversos pontos da história eu me pegava surpresa e orgulhosa pelo modo como ela agia, enfrentava seus problemas e expunha suas ideias. O sr. Rochester, por outro lado, me trouxe sentimentos conflitantes: era óbvio que gostava da Jane, e a forma como se importava com ela, e ele era um homem inteligente e enigmático, mas por boa parte do livro eu não conseguia confiar no caráter dele. Não só por causa dos segredos que ele guardava, mas pela sua relação com a Jane em si.
O amor dele antes da fuga de Jane não me parecia algo realmente duradouro, ele a admirava, mas ao mesmo tempo algumas de suas atitudes me deixaram com o pé atrás. A desigualdade de condições entre eles parecia algo que, com o tempo, iria fazer os dois se afastarem. Ao mesmo tempo, não acho que ele realmente a via como uma igual a princípio: era apaixonado por sua mente, mas ainda parecia se considerar superior. Fiquei positivamente surpresa quando a Jane decide ser fiel aos seus ideais e deixá-lo, não porque não torcia pelo casal, mas porque senti que isso era necessário na história para que o amor entre eles amadurecesse.
A parte em que Jane foge e encontra refúgio com os três irmãos me agradou muito, eu senti que ela finalmente havia feito amigos por si mesma e não estava realmente sozinha no muito. Amei a amizade entre Jane, Diana e Mary, mas St. John me irritou - não muito, a principio, mas quando ele começou a insistir que Jane casasse com ele apenas para que o ajudasse em sua missão missionária, se ofendendo e a tratando mal por isso, e dizendo que ela estava negando o caminho de Deus por não casar com ele realmente me fez desgostar do personagem. Foi um alívio que ela tenha conseguido se manter firme, dizer não a ele, e ir atrás de notícias do sr. Rochester.
Por alguns momentos, quando Jane chega a Thornfield e vê o solar destruído, eu realmente pensei que o sr. Rochester estava morto e o livro teria um final triste, mas por fim os dois se reencontram, e dessa vez senti que o amor deles era mais propenso a dar certo: as situações de ambos haviam mudado, o sr. Rochester se tornou alguém mais humilde e Jane, mais segura do que queria, e senti que o livro terminou de forma perfeita.
Quando comecei a leitura, achei a escrita lenta, descritiva demais, e os acontecimentos antes que Jane chegasse à Thornfield - na casa da tia e na escola - pareciam mais atrasos para que a história realmente começasse. Porém, no decorrer da leitura, acabei me acostumando. Por mais que a escrita realmente seja descritiva demais para o meu gosto, sempra há algo de novo acontecendo na história, novos acontecimentos e plot twists, e ao fim do livro eu percebi que as cenas da infância da Jane eram fundamentais para perceber de onde vinham sua natureza independente e sua firmeza de caráter.
Me impressionou muito, inclusive, a quantidade de acontecimentos nesse livro; pensei que seria uma história calma e pacata, mas há varios acontecimentos intensos. Além disso, os próprios temas discutidos, como o lugar da mulher na sociedade e os trabalhadores sendo vistos como instrumentos e não pessoas, foram coisas que eu não esperava ler num livro escrito a tanto tempo. A coragem da Charlotte Bronte em escrever sobre isso, mostrar uma mulher trabalhadora, estudada, que preza sua independencia e fala sobre as mulheres terem os mesmos anseios que os homens, realmente me surpreendeu.
Houveram momentos problemáticos no livro, claro, principalmente algumas atitudes do sr. Rochester, como tentar mudar quem Jane era e trancar a esposa no sótão - mesmo que ela não estivesse louca antes, ficar mais de dez anos presa num sótão, sem poder sair e ver ninguém além da cuidadora, com certeza a fariam louca. Mas ainda assim é um livro maravilhoso. Meu único arrependimento é não ter lido antes.

I have never read anything quite this beautiful. Charlotte Brontë is a genius and I am in love with her and her way with words.
The descriptions of nature and setting were absolutely stunning and everything is so vividly portrayed. You can feel the crisp autumn air on your skin, smell the hay in summer, vividly picture every flower, hear every storm and see the candles flickering on cold winter nights. So incredibly beautiful.

I just loved the language, the way this is written. And the romance is not the central drama, just one of several as Jane finds her way.
