Most of the novel I throughly enjoyed especially the disconnect between African-Americans and American Africans and the challenges faced when being members of both groups. The main character’s development I enjoyed but I was disappointed by the novel’s end. Still, I understand why it’s been so praised.

What a delightful, enlightening love story. Two very different paths starting out together, peeling apart and unraveling until they finally meet again and attempt to knit back together. I felt connected to Ifemelu, despite our very different lives and circumstances - but isn’t that what some great writers can do, present their characters’ with so much honesty the reader relates. Light at times, funny too, but also very serious and heavy other times. Provided a lot to think about. For me: Right book, right time.
