I really didn’t like this book in the end. The depiction of an immigrants life in the West was beautiful, constantly reminding me of my privilege, in a comical way too. But the description was lacklustre, the plot fell short and I just didn’t like the characters. Obinze and Ifemelu were selfish in the end, and maybe I think that because we didn’t get to see their love, just really gross ‘zooms-in’ on silly details. And Ifemelu was just unlikeable - she treats people like they’re expendable and is filled with hypocrisy.

As a white woman, this exposes subtle as well as overt acts of intentional and unintentional racism I am typically blind to. She shares the character’s entire experience as a young black woman on a student visa … her naïveté, intelligence, strengths, weaknesses … a tough voyage presented in an entertaining and straightforward way. It was highly enlightening to see how America appears to a non-American.
Beautifully honest. This book gave me an eye opening view of a lifestyle and culture I would have never encountered without reading this book.
