Bolte Taylor gives an extraordinary account of her stroke experience that borders on the surreal in her description of an almost indescribable event. At first she uses sheer willpower and begins her recovery process but then moves towards a new age belief system to account for her encounter with 'bliss' when her now more dominant right hand hemisphere of her brain takes the lead.

It is too bad that she did not continue to use analysis to uncover the reasoning for her new found bias for the right hemisphere. And maybe it is too much of the pragmatist in me that would have liked to see more bridging between the two hemispheres as she does claim that her corpus callosum is thicker than the everyday person's.

Jill Taylor is a brain scientist who had experienced a stroke in her left brain. The book is about her personal journey of experiencing a stroke and then recovering from it. Because the brain is so plastic Dr. Jill was able to fully recover in 8 years.

You will appreciate your brain while reading this book. I loved chapter 16 which talked about the difference between your left and right mind.

You can finish this book in 1-3 days, a very light read. The 3 stars because I honestly expected more from this book. She doesn't go into much details about the recovery process, she just keeps talking endlessly about how the brain is beautiful.

Interesting and insightful writing on the author's personal experience with stroke and their inspirational journey. The science writing in this book is not great imo with lots of the right/left brain science not holding up to today's understanding.

What an inspiring story, not just of recovery from medical trauma, but of the possibility to rewire our brains for happiness and good.
