Frankenstein plus Jurassic Park, but FMC with some queer rep.  Mary has struggled to fit into the mold of a woman in the 1800s.  She has tried to be content as the wife of a scientist, contributing to science through her drawings.  However, she wants more.  She is smart and curious, and wants to be a part of the scientific world, not just a wife up in the balcony.  She discovers that her Great Uncle, Dr. Frankenstein had made an unbelievable discovery.  Can she use the remnants of his research to truly create life?

Fun, speculative, but a little slower than I was hoping.  I really enjoyed the quotes at the beginning of every chapter.  Builds upon the questions of Mary Shelley, What makes you a monster?

Narration is exquisite. The fiction seems to be expertly weaved with the real world history. The science and process was grotesque and captivating. Mary Elizabeth Frankenstein is a force to be reckoned with, and I wish her all the best adventures.

What must it be like, do you think, to run about saying whatever one likes, as so many gentlemen do? To have one's flaws and misdeeds attributed not to one's sex, or the manner of one's birth, but to one's character alone. I should like that, I think; to make an utter fool of myself, and be regarded not as a bad example of womanhood, but merely a bad example.

Truth had never opened anyone's heart - or purse strings - to a cause.

There is always that part of us, I think, that supposes ourselves immortal - not me, not today, not like this.

3/5 fun idea just not for me. Though I got some good quotes from it. Many other may love this book, and I can see why, it just wasn't a book for me.

Great setting descriptions, great character development, I'm not really sure what was lacking in this for me, but something was.

I love the concept of this novel: it's very original and a fun gothic take on historical fiction for the classical lit nerds. It does drag a bit in the middle for me, so I think it could have been shorter. The queer rep is there but only just barely, honestly, and I wish it had been explored more.
