I really enjoyed the "twist" and the overall message/theme of The Witch Boy, but I didn't feel that drawn into its world and I didn't connect much with the characters. I think this is partially due to the fact it's a pretty short graphic novel, so it may be that the characters and world are further developed in the sequels.

also, perhaps too much of the book was taken up by various scenes communicating the "you can't do that you're a boy!" message from Aster's family. of course that's the whole point of contention in the book so I understand why, but they could have gotten the magical gender roles point across without rehashing it so many times, and that might leave room for more details about the characters or world

A cute story with the moral of you can do/be anything you want to be. There shouldn't be girl stuff and boy stuff, just stuff anyone can try. And we should accept each other for who we are.
