this memoir felt both very close to me and very distant.
rationalization and intellectualization are my leading coping mechanisms too, I approach any sudden event as a business analysis task - assess as-is state to identify if there any information I'm missing and seek trusted sources to bridge the knowledge gap and act on the issue (inability to act is devastating); I catalog my feelings and locate them in my body to track how the event impacts my emotional and mental state; I go through my routine to factor in the event; if it's not enough, I do an inventory of activities that can keep me up and running. so, just as for Joan, it's more about management for me.
at the same time, I don't see the life-death dichotomy in a way where life is a process and death is an interruption of this process. for me both life and death are ongoing processes. say, my glass is half-death.
also, I couldn't stop thinking of a line from Simone de Beauvoir's A Very Easy Death: "She had a very easy death; an upper-class death." because this memoir sounds a lot like an upper-class grief - grief where the bereaved can afford not working for 8 months straight.

joan didion’s writing so raw and beautiful. having lost someone recently, her words resonated profoundly with me. loved this book. will define tlm read more books from didion

Didion writes with eloquence about grief,death and life.
“You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends” is how she starts to write about the death of her husband. The rest of the book is about her year of life not “as you know it” but as someone lost and disoriented by grief.
I will definitely read the book she wrote about the death of her daughter (“Blue Nights”) but maybe not for a while.
