Why should you read this book?
A Place For Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza is the first book published by Sarah Jessica Parker’s new imprint for Hogarth! I have to say that I fell in love with this book and I know that I’ll feel this way about it for a long time. This will be that sort of book I will often recommend to people. And this also means that A Place For Us became one of my favorite books EVER!

A Place For Us tells the story of an Indian-American Muslim family. It deals with genre, family expectations and religious issues. This book is poignant and life-changing. It makes you question your attitudes and postures and remembers you to be more tolerant and accepting of others. In terms of structure, the novel is told by different voices and lacks linearity. And, although it’s a slow-burner, A Place For Us keeps calling you and you keep wanting to pick up where you left off.

Mirza is an incredible and talented writer. Her prose is absolutely poetic! Part 4 is definitely a sublime piece of literature. I was slowly savoring it because I didn’t end this book. Please, read this book! You won’t regret it!

This ached in the best way possible. It’s hard for believe this is Mirza’s debut novel - how lucky we are to live in a time to witness this modern classic. I look forward to more from her.

The whole book was gorgeous but the last 100 pages teared into my soul. Who writes like that?

He had revealed ninety-nine names for them to understand him. There was the Avenger, the Firm, but there was also the Forgiving, the Patient. To read any surah in the Quran, one first had to read of God's mercy and compassion; almost every single chapter began with that line.

While I enjoyed this book, I think I would have loved it in print. Books with different charcter pov sometimes get lost in audio translation.

The author writes about about the family's dynamics in a way that feels realistic and makes the reader sympathize with each character. She explores themes of intergenerational divide, culture & religion, and blame/guilt well. Her writing style is simple but visual, making the reader feel as if they are at the scene described without having to use unnecessary words.

Wonderfully painted characters; I especially enjoyed young Amar’s campaign for new sneakers that all the cool kids had at school
