This was such a lovely yet kind of heartbreaking book. I haven’t read a middle grade chapter book since I was a child and wow, this was good! I liked the style and appreciated how the author navigated themes/concepts like parental abandonment, loss, school dynamics (read: mean girls) and self-discovery from a 12-year-old’s perspective. I can honestly see how I could have used (and in some ways needed) this book at that age!

Be mindful of CWs!

A heartfelt depiction of mental illness, budding queerness and disjointed families seen through the eyes of a 12 year old!

It seems like there’s lots of contemporary or fantasy middle grade fiction, but I haven’t read much magical realism in this age range. I love the middle ground of magical realism, so I appreciated that about this book! The elements of the story regarding spirits and the spirit world were my favorite parts. As often happens with middle grade novels, I wish there could be more in certain aspects, but I know brevity is a necessity! This audiobook was narrated with a pretty strong Caribbean accent, which added a layer to the text. It felt very authentic to the characters and setting, and helped immerse me in this world. But it was also tricky for me to fully grasp every word, and that sometimes took me out of the story. Lastly, can we talk about how gorgeous this cover art is??
