Readers usually decide to read the book first, listen to the book first or read and listen to the book at the same time. For most audio selections, I listen to the book first and if I feel the need, pick up the hardcover later. Concerning Lulu and the Brontosaurus, I read the book first. The book's shape is unique (between the size a novel and an easy reader). The illustrations and typography added so much to the story. I would highly recommend reading the story. After reading the book, I spotted the audio book. With a little ditty spun throughout the story, I wanted to hear the narrator's rendition of the song.

Michele Medlin sang very well. I was pleased to hear that her beat closely reflected my beat while reading. Michele's voice works well with young character of Lulu. I prefer deeper voices for narrators, but children will relate well with Michele's sweet, young voice. All in all, it was amusing to hear the story, but I prefer reading Lulu and the Brontosaurus.

Lulu is a spoiled child whose parents have a hard time saying "no"; however, they have drawn the line at getting Lulu a pet brontosaurus for her birthday. Lulu decides to go get one for herself then, and sets out into the forest with her well-stocked suitcase. Along the way, she meets a snake, tiger, and bear, all of whom are irritated at her loud singing and therefore threaten her. She fights back and continues on her way.
The author interjects at various times to talk with the reader, including to acknowledge that dinosaurs and humans did not coexist and that animals don't talk. This makes the book a nice story to use with a fiction writing unit.
There are interesting topics to discuss here including how being kind and polite result in different behavior in others than being confrontational (except with the dinosaur...). The dinosaur's interest in abducting Lulu though being very nice and polite is a little disturbing even though Lulu had every intention of abducting him in the first place.
Good for more advanced younger readers as well as for older but not as strong readers.

Read aloud with my 6 yr old. She cackled hysterically and LOVED the writer commentary & multiple endings.

So Lulu is sassy and annoying but I also found her quite funny and redeeming in some ways. The Brontosaurus is brilliant and a good role model for Lulu. I like the premise and style of this book. It will be fun to reread with the kiddo when he is bigger to get his take.
