This was a great read! The first 100 pages had me hooked and were perfect. Things did slow down a bit once we got into Bletchley but it still remained an engaging story I couldn’t put down. I loved every one of our side characters however found Viv to be a little irritating at times. We love a complex main character and character growth however at some points the corruption of her government was staring her right in the face (from page one really) and for someone as intelligent as her I thought she’d have caught on before page 300. It was frustrating at times. The politics in this book however were fascinations and a scary comparative to some of the UKs politics today. I especially loved the inclusion of Bletchley Park and how the author put her own spin on the Enigma Code and the real life code breaking that took place there during WW2. I loved the world building and how it stayed true to how Britain would have been during that time period whilst also considering how dragons would change what the world looks like. Also I loved all off the dragons they all have my heart
Overall a great read and the only real critique I can give is how dumb viv could be at times despite her supposedly being the smartest character. Girl I wanna see u use that brain of urs in the next book

Meh. I loved that this book had a fast, action-packed start, but after they got to Bletchley it draaaaagged.  I really didn’t like the main character and I wasn’t invested in her research or her “romantic” relationship.  At first I thought she was headed for an enemies-to-lovers situation with a different character, but I was definitely wrong about that.  It took the author way too long to reveal what Viv did to Sophie and for Viv to join the Coalition, and by that point I just didn't care anymore.  I wish the book was about Chumana, Marquis, or Viv's parents instead.  I'm also wondering why the author chose to set the story in a real time and place rather than just creating her own world.  Very little of the plot had any relevance to real 1920s England.

Scrapes a 4 because I’ll get the next book. The world set up just annoyed me.
Is the Dragon language telepathy, in which case how can Humans hear it. If it’s ultrasonic Humans just can’t hear it. That’s not telepathy. Then it’s emotions and can heal. Either just declare it magic or make a better scientific explanation. Also there was no need to call the place Bletchley. It added nothing and in fact I found it distracting. The slightly different history of the world I accept. It’s an easy way to set up a world we understand but with differences. But Bletchley was unnecessary.

I like languages…and dragons…but there was not enough good stuff to offset how much I dislike reading the main character. I think “heavy handed” would be my word for this. perhaps it’s too YA for me in making points by being too obvious and repetitive. I get that she is somewhat sheltered and naive but it just took soooo long for her to start understanding the world. so long. so annoying. and then the time she spent agonizing
about being a bad person and making decisions
was also so long. and the “forbidden love” trope wasn’t working for me here. and some villains felt like caricatures.  and so on. I finished because I was waiting for some kind of resolution…which finally came…but I feel no need to read any more. oh well.

I read this book in a day, I simply couldn’t put it down. I wasn’t expecting to cry from a YA book, but I’m still so excited to read the next book.
