Okay, loving a societal commentary plus dragons? And as someone who had a middle school hyoerfixations on code-breaking, this really scratches that part of my brain. Viv is a complex protagonist learning her world isn't as straightforward as she was raised. Can't wait for the sequel to come out!

Really liked this book, ALTHOUGH I got quite annoyed with

how incredibly privileged the main character Vivien was, and how barely anything made that change. And I felt like in the end, something random (I don’t really even remember what it was) made her change her mind and then she was suddenly #1 Rebel for the Coalition!!! Did not feel very realistic

Apart from that: yippee, dragons, languages(!!!), dark academia vibes and moral greyness along with some found family. Key ingredients to making me like a book

Peace isn’t peace if it’s only given to some.

Fear breeds hatred, the kind that oppresses dragons and humans alike.

i was immediately drawn into this book by the incredibly intriguing premise, which is dragons in this world (set in 1920s london) with their own languages and their ways of communication; they all made this story really alive and fully immersive.
the dragons themselves are fascinating, especially a certain PINK DRAGON!!! 🩷🐉 (who is also a fan of chumana!! i know i certainly am!!) her personality and intelligence really stood out 🔥

the story is fast paced and def gripped me from the start✨ (i remember reading the first chapter and my jaw dropped!! i was completely sold!!!! the first chapter really is that good🫶

what’s also really interesting about this book is that i found out the author is actually a literary translator, which makes the focus on (dragonic) language and communication and translation feel even more authentic and thoughtfully crafted ✍️📖

the fmc vivien is really smart (very hermione-level intelligence! 💫); her speed of learning and ability to grasp on abstract concepts def shines throughout the story✨
even tho some parts in this book do feel a bit juvenile at times, it still all makes sense since vivien is a young highschooler and this is a YA setting book📚
however i think vivien’s thoughts and actions def are consistent and true to her character, despite she makes some naive decisions as she has limited views on the world.

overall it’s a really interesting book that’s surprisingly easy to get into;
even though the book looks super thick 😂😂, i ended up running through it way faster than i expected!! 🔥
def recommend if you want something immersive and full of dragons 🐉✨💕
