This book didn't resonate with me. The narrative and art style didn't quite hit the mark. Despite its attempt at realism, the story was dull, lacking in dynamic character progression, which made it hard to find intriguing. The art failed to capture my interest, further compounded by unclear dialogue attribution and repetitive conversations. Having explored numerous graphic novels in recent years, I found this one to fall short of my expectations. The story felt underdeveloped, especially in its exploration of the main characters' relationship, lacking any substantive backstory or character growth. The one highlight for me was the portrayal of the kid.

wow i just have finished reading this and my first thought was "that's it? it's over?". like yeah i'm kinda used to graphic novels and i understand the plot they cover is usually somehow shorter than a regular novel. but, yeah, it was really good and i was expecting for some more resolution by the end :/ but yeah it was really nice and i just couldn't help having that reaction because i felt like i was getting more into the story by the end and i was expecting to see what would happen to the characters.
however, i really loved this story. i feel like this year i have developed some kind of attachement to stories about different family dynamics and this graphic novel is a perfect example of that. i really loved seeing the relationship between the two sisters (bron & gracie, and amanda & rachel) and how nessie kind of held 3/4 of them together.
i guess at first i was really confused about the artstyle because i couldn't understand why bron, rachel and nessie looked like "beasts" and i thought that was some kind of important detail to the plot: them being "monsters" and having to hide from other human beings or idk. but yeah i think it's cool that the author just used it as a way to show when the characters felt more wildfree and careless.
i think it's a nice story about family and sisterhood dynamics, mental health conflicts, gender identity and learning how to let go and be vulnerable with the people who matter to you
besides the lack of a nice wrap up, i think something else i didn't really like was how, some times, the speech bubbles weren't really helpful to tell who was speaking. but despite all of this, i would recommend the story, it's really emotive and reflective and it made me tear up like twice, while reading it <3

Beautiful flowing art accompanying adults and adult emotional difficulties. Really loved Nessie and her young, childish voice as all these adults do emotional juggling around her.
