2.5 stars. I enjoyed Cruel Beauty much more.

I really liked this author's previous book, and had high hopes for this one, but I didn't like it at all. The world and premise was confusing and hard to follow, the love triangle was ridiculous (she had more chemistry with her best friend than either of those guys) and while the writing style was good, it wasn't really enough to make me care about the outcome of the story. Mostly I kept reading it because I've been setting aside a lot of books lately without finishing them, and I was a bit sick of it.

Also, the "based on Little Red Riding Hood" is very loose at best. I didn't see that many allusions to the fairy tale at all, so that was disappointing.

Audiobook was the perfect choice for this read and definitely added to the wonderful atmosphere of the story! A very interesting, creepy, and dark fairy tale retelling (very loose retelling).

I finally finished this damned ass bitch (I beg you not to think I didn't like it because of calling it a "damned ass bitch). I felt this very very far away from what I found in Cruel Beauty, which is good, means Hodge doesn't stick too much on formulas besides being tales retellings, yet I felt the romance kinda fake? Prob just me but I didn't believe either when they said it?

On the other hand, I L O V E D the Forestborn/Bloodbound idea.

So, TL;DR, it's good but not my favourite.

This was my book clubs pick for the month of August 2023. I got deathly sick in August, was hospitalized, then bedridden for months after. This book was difficult to get through. For obvious reasons and I just had a lot of trouble getting into it. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell you about this story if I wanted to. Not sure if it was due to my health at the time...or the story itself. I think I liked it...maybe? kind of? I didn't hate it. I remember parts of the story, i think? When I try to think about it...I can remember certain parts, playing out in my head, but they feel very much like a fever dream...and well, I was having many of those, so that actually checks out. I'll keep my rating at a neutral 3 star, and change it accordingly, should I ever get around to re-reading it.

3.5 I really like all the allusion. These books are dark, not for young teens, but I like them.

Lovely prose, but I just didn't like the characters as much as Nyx and Ignifex.
Armand and Rachelle's romance didn't convince, especially when she's pinned on top of Erec every 10 pages.

So dark and weird, I love it!

This was good. I liked Cruel Beauty better.

Slow to start, but I kept going because of the positive reviews I had read and I'm glad I did. While the romance in the book is subpar, rushed, and unnecessary, Hodge weaves an excellent sweeping tale of fantasy that cleverly reimagines several fairy tales - Red Riding Hood and Hansel & Gretel to name a few. Hodge's spins a vivid world for the reader and I thoroughly enjoyed the many surprise plot twists I encountered along the way.
