Really fun, fairytale-inspired read. I think the mythos and plot of this story flowed a lot better than Hodge’s other retelling “Cruel Beauty”. There were also a couple enjoyable twists that did catch me by surprise. I wish the romantic pairings had a little more tension to work with, but overall I found the love triangle interesting enough to keep reading.
I loved our main character, Rachelle. Probably because she bears an uncanny resemblance to another headstrong character that I adore: Abigail Armstrong.

4.5 stars. This was very close to a 5 star book.
2,5/5*
Když rozeberete Karkulku do jednotlivých motivů a kouknete na ně z různých úhlů, a pak je chytře spojíte, vznikne příběh Karmínového pouta. A tahle část mi přišla bombovní!

This is exactly the kind of book I like best - brave heroine who has to save the day, good world building, magic, and romance. There are twists and turns that I didn't see coming AND women who are friends with each other! Rachelle and Armand are very fun characters, and I enjoyed reading the story of how they defeated the Big Bad Devourer. Rosamund Hodge is a wonderful writer, and I am already looking forward to reading her other books.
This wasn’t poorly written, but the characters lacked depth and the plot line seemed made up as Hodge went along. It was a pretty poor sequel to Cruel Beauty, as it had been a great standalone. The main character was so forgettable (a heroine tortured by her own guilt trope) I don’t even remember her name and I just finished the book last night! Erec was entirely predictable and Armand was a poor foil. There was no chemistry, build up, or background to the main character falling in love with either -so I honestly had no idea why she fancied either of them. Such a shame.
This book was very interesting. It was kinda hard to get into, it was a bit confusing at the begining, but throughout the book, I actually started to like it, and at the end, things fell into right places. I would give this book 3,5 stars.
Yes, I read this all at once, with very few stops, and no, I'm not ashamed.
I loved EVERYTHING about this book. Literally everything. The love interests, the conflicts, the main character, the character arcs, the setting, the writing, the pacing, the world, the magic—

My favorite character was Rachelle herself, Erec being a close second. They felt so real and intense and everything about them was so well done. I didn't love Armand as much as I was definitely supposed to, but I still really liked him as a character and really appreciated his role in the plot. I hadn't expected Amélie to be as important as she was, as best friend characters usually don't have very big roles, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that she was a real person, not just a pretty painting for Rachelle to compare herself to. It was all very well done.
Rosamund Hodge has an interesting and awesome way of writing her retellings. She isn't satisfied with just one story to retell. No, she has to add as many as possible, and it's like solving a puzzle to find all the little ones. It makes you feel like you know something more, that you've glimpsed into the world a little deeper than everyone else, when you notice them. It's such an amazing experience. I want to write like that.
I didn't think I would love this more than Cruel Beauty, but oh well here we are today, with this book shining down straight from heaven to bless my wicked, undeserving heart.
Feed the Forest inside you with blood, and it would feed you in return.

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*
I went into this book with two thoughts in mind:
1. Based off what I got with "Cruel Beauty", I knew this would be a re-telling like no other
2. I thought that although it was a different series, that "Crimson Bound" would still be set in the same world as "Cruel Beauty". Perhaps it is, and that Nyx and Arcadia are held separately as was described in "Cruel Beauty", and the world of "Crimson Bound" is a parallel France.
What I didn't expect when I picked up this book:
A very, VERY dark story.
An anti-heroine who I loved so much.
A boy with no hands.
A devil in disguise.
A love triangle I could actually tolerate.
A plot with extreme intrigue.
Each character was memorable.
Rachelle. Erec. Armand. Amélie. The Bishop. Justine. King Philippe-Auguste II. La Fontaine. Aunt Léonie. Zisa. Tyr. Vincent. Raoul.
I fell in love with Erec, I'm not going to deny that, and I wish that the fate he encountered wasn't so.
I like Armand and Rachelle together.
I adore Amélie and her friendship with Rachelle.
"Crimson Bound" is most definitely my favourite of the two novels of Hodge's that I've read.

More accurately, I think I'd give this 3 and a half stars.
I know this book received a lot of mixed reviews. Still, it was my perfect cup of tea. And I don't even like tea. Rosamund Hodge knows how to weave together a dark and eerie story with a whimsical feel trailing behind. The concept was absolutely amazing. The Great Forest is this everlasting forest from the beginning before humans. It sometimes slips through reality and terrifying things follow behind it. The Devourer comes from within it. He's an ancient and cruel creature that once consumed the sun and the moon. Rachelle, our MC, has lived her entire life battling her destiny to become a Forestborn which are the supernatural followers of the Devourer in the Great Forest. And there is just so so so much more I'm not going to spoil.
Ack! It was just an amazing concept. I love eerie forests and creepy but alluring dark destinies that characters can either accept or fight off. One thing I really enjoy about Hodge's characters in her books is that they are unapologetic to who they are. They recognize the dark and wickedness inside themselves and they use it to their will.
I only wish this could have been a double POV story with Rachelle and Armand. Armand was such a quiet and introspective character, but he was TOO quiet. I barely grasped his personality so I didn't care for him as much as I wanted to--which made me love the book less. And then there was Eric. Oh Eric. I really really liked him. I so desperately wanted this redemption plot to happen for him to knock him off his cocky ass. No spoilers though, the book did take a really interesting turn even if it wasn't the one I wanted.
Another thing I love about Hodge is the mythology she builds for her worlds. There was this epic story about the Devourer and how the sun and moon were first rescued from his stomach. Just so so good. This book receives five stars for concept, that's for sure!
I can't wait for Rosamund Hodge's newest book. I think it's releasing at the end of this year. She writes so beautifully and I love the worlds and characters she creates. Yes yes yes.
