3.5 stars

Why give us a sexy, dark prince-type character just to cast him aside for the bland golden boy?

It was meh. The imagery was really good but the characters were a little lacking.

A dark fantasy, exploring ideas of sin and forgiveness. The plot pace was irregular the first 2/3 or so - action and excitement only to fall back to plodding and waiting. The martyr trope was old from the beginning. "I did a terrible thing, therefore no one possibly could like me and I must punish myself by not reaching out to anyone or asking for help or talking about what is going on." Eyeroll. YA fiction. "And I will justify it to myself by saying it is for their benefit." Sigh.

But the ending made up for all the spots that lagged in the beginning. Action! Treachery! Betrayal! Redemption! Wonderful weaving together of all of the threads introduced at the beginning of the story.

Probably realistically 3.5 stars but I will round up because I did enjoy it.

Hodge really does like crazy, confusing endings I guess. However, this ending was slightly less confusing, and I think I liked this book even more than Cruel Beauty! I loved all the characters so much. Rachelle kind of reminds me of Celaena from Throne of Glass but much less annoying and much more likable.

3.5 stars

I really did not like this book. The characters were superficial and even Rachelle didn't have any development until halfway through the book. I thought that the plot was lackluster and the supposed "plot twists" came out of nowhere (in a bad way) and then were placed one right after another. This book definitely did not click for me.

I loved Cruel Beauty and thought I’d enjoy this book. I did not. I did not buy the romance. And I did not understand what was happening about a third of the time.

Honestly I thought something romantic was going to happen between Rachelle and Amelie. They had more chemistry than Rachelle and the two male love interest.

Was three stars but upon reflection, I had to put it down.

My favourite things about Rosamund Hodge's books are the places she dreams up. Such incredible wondrous places where sinister things happen.
