This book was really cute and fun to read. It's basically a f/f Can't Buy Me Love / Love Don't Cost a Thing story which I really enjoyed. Also really excited to see characters who are happily queer and religious!

I'm honestly surprised by how much love this book gets. The main premise is
a white girl financially blackmailing a WOC to forcibly out herself all for the purpose of making another girl jealous. As much as the author tries to gloss over the socioeconomic and racial dynamics of this relationship by making a few "woke" comments, it's incredibly abusive and toxic. Not only is it creating a nasty power dynamic, it also forced Irene to be the subject of homophobia and manipulation by her ex, when she hadn't planned on coming out in the first place.
I can't find a single redeemable quality in Scottie. The author tries to excuse her behavior by saying it was because of a broken heart, but being hurt doesn't excuse acting like a self centered sociipath. Irene deserves so much better.
Also, the fact that Irene says she doesn't like grand romantic gestures and then Scottie interrupts her routine to do one anyway, and that somehow wins her back? Inconsistent, dumb, not at all aligned with Irene's character, and made me cringe so hard I thought I was going to turn inside out. </Spoiler>

I kind of felt like the characters weren’t as fleshed out as I would have liked them to be, but that could just be me. I think that if I would have read this when I was in high school, I would have lost my mind. And that’s what matters, right?

An easy, lighthearted read full of high school drama (which I usually dislike) packaged in a cute and realistic exploration of teen romance. I adored seeing the families be so loving and healthy with their relationships with their queer children, and the romance satisfied so many of the tropes I love while keeping original and fun. This novel deals only sparingly in the homophobia that was so common in my Georgia high school / hometown, and I really love it for letting readers indulge in a realistic fiction where this could maybe be the norm one day.

I think that even though this might not be a novel I'd keep on my own shelves (the plot has a bit too much drama for me, but it's easy to see how other readers would come back to it), it was absolutely worth the read.

This book was so amazing! I read it in one sitting and when I was about halfway through the book, I had to buy it for myself. It's so sweet, yet also tackles hard topics. It really balanced fluff and angst, not to mention the importance of growth. It was an awesome book and I will gush about this forever.
