Before I Let Go

Despite what everyone else seems to think, I actually enjoyed this. Maybe not 5-star material normally, but having an explicitly asexual character as the protagonist was a tremendous breath of fresh air and something I certainly would like to see more of, so I'm definitely going to bump this rating up a notch.

Corey is pretty bland, more like someone a reader could project onto than a person on her own. I didn't have a problem with that. Being able to put myself into the shoes of a former native returning to a creepy Alaskan town was like...well, it reminded me of a much creepier version of that game "Gone Home" that got really popular back in the day. If a team got together and had made this into an interactive experience, it would have worked really well. The climactic bit at the end read like something straight out of a survival horror game.

Admittedly, I've also been reading a lot of very dull, slice-of-life chick lit that allllmost hints at wanting to be magic, but doesn't pull it off. I'm actually buying the supernatural elements here. Maybe it's because I pretty much mentally envisioned this as a game. Maybe everyone should just imagine they're playing a game instead. The biggest issue I had were the flashbacks. They interrupted the action, and really didn't do much else. It would've been way better if everything could have just been explored and discovered straight-up in the present day.

This one had a lot of potential, but didn't live up to it. It left questions and I am a reader that needs the questions answered, especially the ones that make no sense. Some things you can leave to a reader's imagination, but some things need explaining. It was a quick read, and I really wanted to get to know Kyra, but it took the entire book to do that, and in the meantime, I had to deal with the rest of the town of Lost Creek who are creepy caricatures, and weird, inexplicable (and never dealt with) circumstances.

I loved this.

I was utterly lost in it. It is not an action based novel but it’s a beautiful and compelling work of characterisation.

Perfect.

I realise this isn’t a helpful review but I don’t want to spoil it. Go. Now. Buy. Read.

I liked the first half of the book, but the ending wrapped up in a strange, escapist way. Was it supposed to be a murder mystery or a supernatural thriller? I was entertained throughout the story, but it was...different.

Ooh, I like this one.

I got it for my birthday, but didn't manage to finish it until now. It starts out slow, but gradually gets more and more creepy. What I first mistook for repetitive writing (people kept mentioning to the main character that she didn't belong there) turned out to be because she actually.. didn't belong there. Uh, I can't really explain it any better without spoiling all of it.

Everything considered I liked this book, but it's not my favourite. The story is really original though and carries it home.

grief sucks. beautiful book

3 ⭐️ middle got boring but the words and phrases about grief are so powerful

3.5
Loved the ace rep, the different methods of storytelling, and the magic realism. Overall a solid read, but nothing that stands out a lot.

WHY? The end broke me.

I decided to give this author a second chance. I read her debut novel a while ago and I was disappointed. This book was somewhat similar. The story was dragging very slow. But this book was better because of rising ride. In the end was way better compared to the beginning. I was a little scared in the end. I actually finally got to have this feeling to be scared for the character in the story. There was so much quotes and dialogue that is too common everywhere especially on Tumblr. But in the end, a lot has improved. I’m still somewhat not satisfied with how this had played out. The beginning sucks. The end was good. I guess this is halfie rated from me.
