I really wanted to enjoy this book. I really wanted it to make me feel like a kid again and experience all those emotions and feelings I had when I was 12 (the age i would've been when books like this were popular).

All in all, if you can look past inappropriate jokes that were accepted at the time (i.e. one of the main characters being stereotyped, lots of sexual innuendos, and a biphobic comment or two), this book could be fun for someone in their early teens. But for a 20 year old who reads books that are much more advanced than this, it just didn't hit for me.

If you loved Holden Caulfield, you’ll love Greg Gaines and this is the book for you. I do not love Holden Caulfield.

some weird vibes. it’s written from a teenager’s perspective, and it made me uncomfortable at times. the ways earl’s family is portrayed feels vaguely problematic, as well as others parts that feel like micro-agressions (namely when they try pho for the second time). the protagonist constantly shits on himself, and it’s a little annoying.
all that aside, it was an okay book; i liked the story, it was just a weird read. i suppose that makes it more accurate to the high school experience, makes it more “sincere”. i was not a fan, but i don’t regret reading it. the formatting was fun, and it was easy to get through. i do regret rereading it; it’s been a few years, and it was worse than i remembered.. this will be getting donated.

One of my favorite books of all time, probably because I’ve never cried and laughed so hard for one book. I love the way that Andrews is so honest about his characters’ flaws, overtly avoiding romanticization and filling the novel to overflowing with irreverent humor and yet throwing gut punches with gorgeous and heartbreaking language.
