La Bete Humaine

This book is the goriest novel from the 1800s I've ever read. Also they use the f-word in it, which is sort of wonderful. But all the characters were also wonderfully hateable, and if you don't mind keeping in mind that women didn't really have rights in 1890 so it was completely normal to talk about women as possessions, this book is thoroughly enjoyable.
