I was looking for a relatively easy, light read and my friend recommended this. Although, as mentioned earlier, there are some content warnings that need to be included, this for the most part was sweet and terrific! Putting Elizabeth Zott, our protagonist, in 1960’s America made for a clearly misogynistic setting. However, she (mostly) thrives throughout and I appreciated all the loose strings getting pulled together for the end of the story ✨
If you’re looking for a book in which women strive in science and where systemic issues are mentioned, this one is for you 😊 4 out of 5 stars for me ✨

There is a reason this is a five star read. This writing is beautiful, intentional, and meaningful. Each word was written with purpose. Everything in this story; backstory, inner monologue, character, had reason. I LOVED how everything was wrapped up in the end. Of course I cried 😭 Ugh, please read!!
Last thought, Six-thirty is my favorite character. I highlighted so many of his parts. He is a wise dog.

The use of tropes and typecasts severely dim the ingenuity of the book. Most of the plot points can be seen from miles away, but they are still entertaining to see unfurl. Though this book touches on topics such as sexual assault, discrimination, and grief, it reads more like a fluffy beach read than an impactful piece.
Furthermore, most of the male characters are painstakingly one-dimensional: Lazy, stupid, sexist. We are meant to be fond of Calvin Evans, Zott's partner, though the author's means of provoking this from the reader is by making him the only developed male character. This is a pitiful and cheap way to write, and probably the most disappointing theme in the book.
Finally, although this book is ostensibly feminist, the main plot diverges considerably from its empowering tone and settles resolutely in disappointing territory.

An easy read and a page turner. Great story and wonderful characters.
In some ways it was interesting to read about how bad things were for women in the 1950's and 1960's, but really it just reinforced for me that things are still really bad. Things have gotten so bad for women, especially in the US recently. It's just feels like a never ending fight. It's a bit tiring. I even learned a bit of chemistry.
