The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious---And Perplexing---City
David Lebovitz
As a person who has never been to France, but has always wanted to go, I appreciated that this book went beyond the same old "touristy" descriptions of the city of lights and really explored the experience of a "foreigner" immersing himself in the everyday French culture. Lebovitz did a very good job describing his encounters with the French and offered up his opinions in a manner that carefully balancedon the line of both critique and respect for all the people he met and places he went to. It also didn't hurt that he included mouthwatering descriptions of food and delectable recipes that made me want to jump right into the kitchen and start cooking.
Great writing and I like how brief the chapters are, each themed with a different part of life in Paris. I did not use the recipes, though, and his writing made Parisians and the city sound like a huge set of inconveniences, though he mentioned once loving both.
Funny, full of amazing food and recipes. LOVED it!!
I looooooved this book - the experiences, the stories, the recipes, all of it.

I really enjoyed this account of an American living in Paris. I felt like I learned a lot about Parisians and Parisian food while being entertained by Lebovitz's self-deprecating humour. The recipes look really good as well, each accompanied by an introductory story, and there is very useful list of shopping (and eating) resources in the back. I expect to read this again, hopefully on my first trip to Paris!

I wanted to like this but... I was a bit put off by David. He seemed pretentious and overly proud of how he had become like the French. He seemed to look down on those who travel to Paris. Lots of interesting insight into how the French live and his appreciation of food is delightful. However, the overall tone of the author put me off.
I read this on my trip to Paris and loved it. It was a really quick read and had some great tidbits and funny observations on how the locals act and what proper French etiquette is. It was also funny to see things while I was visiting that he writes about - like French men's love of fishermen vests! I'd highly recommend it if you're visiting Paris, or just want to read about the quirky culture.
Educational AND funny. I had many laugh-out-loud moments while reading this. I only wish I had read it BEFORE visiting Paris. The author's observations are spot on! I especially like the fact that he includes recipes at the end of each chapter.
