If you’re planning a trip to Paris, you might enjoy this entertaining description of what life is like living in France’s capital city. This is neither a travelogue nor travel guide but Lebowitz, a pastry chef who once worked at Chez Panisse, provides plenty of useful information for those planning a visit. While Lebowitz agrees that Parisians are deserving of their reputation for rudeness, he also provides examples of connection and kindness. He’s an amusing writer and his self deprecating humor and funny stories add much to the entertainment value of this enjoyable book. It doesn’t hurt that each chapter ends with a recipe or two. I tried his recipe for French chocolate cake and it was fantastic. In my two-teenager household it didn’t even last for 24 hours.
What fun--Lebovitz is such a character, there were lots of times I felt as if I was reading a Bemelmans story--and the recipes. Can't wait to try many, starting with the absinthe cake, the fromage blanc souffle, the Breton buckwheat cake...
Funny foodie memoir about living in Paris. I enjoyed his thoughts on the quirks of Parisians and his sense of humor, although parts were a bit repetitive. The recipes look great
Definitely one of my favorite expat-in-Paris books! The observations were so good, and so EDUCATIONAL. If you are going to Paris you should read this book so you know how to behave properly in the shops and such. I always consider myself fairly in tune to these things, as I speak French and lived there (okay, not in Paris, but still - France) for 6 months, but boy did I learn a lot from this book!
Also: I am seriously craving some brownies right now.

Fun read by an American pastry chef who loved to Paris and now writes and blogs about his experiences. I've read his blog and have a a bunch of his recipes in my standard repertoire. Books by bloggers often feel like a rehash of the blog but this felt fresh and new. Also enjoyed the recipes scattered throughout. Next steps are to make his famous brownies.
3.5 stars! This was so fun! It was great to get a real, humorous account of an American living in Paris. This book was a gift from my best friend before my first trip to Paris, and I’m glad I finally got to it (and somewhat glad I didn’t read it before I went - it might’ve scared me off!). I’m not much of a chef, but I did flag some desserts to try! As much as I love Paris and look forward to visiting throughout my life, this book confirmed I could never live there - but I will enjoy the food and splendor always!
This book is deliciously funny and poignant. David Lebovitz does a great job of talking about Paris and what it's like to live life there in terms any American can understand. I also can't wait to try out all the recipes!
The writing in this book was so witty and I loved all of his anecdotes about living in Paris. It definitely reminded me of my French teacher and his cultural stories, especially the chapter about coffee. Even though I don't think I could eat any of these recipes I am very glad I had a bar of dark chocolate in my desk drawer because I don't think I could have made it through the book without it, the descriptions were that delicious.
