I can't believe it's taken me so long to discover David Sedaris - one of the funniest authors I've come across. I finished this collection of gems and immediately started another.

I think this is the first Sedaris book to let me down.
I glanced over my other reviews of his books, because I have this thing with authors. When I am really (and I mean really) not enjoying one book, it tarnishes my memory of their other books. Was I deluding myself? Is he really not as funny as I remember? Why do I keep reading this person?
I checked my reviews. I love David Sedaris. The lowest review I've given is 3 stars. So, shut up, brain.
But I really didn't like this one. It starts off slow, and by the time it gets interesting, your brain is just ready to turn it off and give up.
The pick up is, not surprisingly, once you get to the chapters he performed live. I don't know if it's that his delivery on those is played up for an audience, rather than just recitation, the other chapters.
Blood Work was certainly amusing. I listened to it through once, then restarted the story to fully appreciate it. But it wasn't until "Six to Eight Black Men" that I really started laughing. Hard, and loudly, in my car, looking like an absolute mad woman.
From there we go to "Rooster at the Hitchin' Post", which introduces Paul. There should be an entire book devoted to Paul, and David's mimicry of his voice. His chapters are really and truly the best.
Chicken in the Henhouse is deep in what I believe is an unintentional way. And Nuit of the Dead just made me very upset for the poor damn mouse.
Maybe the book is written this way on purpose. Low expectations from the opening unpleasant chapters, then building to hilarity, then cresting.
It's just annoying, really.
Realizing how many of these stories I like, I'm revisiting the opening of this review, and my belief I didn't like the book. What is that? The only reason I kept going is because it is David Sedaris, and he's supposed to be funny.
I think that's what annoys me most of all. That I thought I didn't like it when I really did.

love this guy! a few were boring but generally extremely enjoyable. stories about paul made me laugh out loud
